Visual Purple and the Photopic Luminosity Curve.

چکیده
Introduction THE precise relationship which has been established between the scotopic luminosity curve a'nd visual purple (Dartnall & Goodeve, 1937; Wald, 19138) leads one to expect that the photopic luminositv curve is'similarly related to some " photopic " pigment or pigments. This latter hypothesis has given rise to considerable speculation, particularly since the evidence for the existence of retinal pigments, other than the various forms of visual purple, is not unequivocal. In any case there is no evidence for such additional pigments in the human retina. Visual purple mediates scotopicvision by virtue of the photochemical changes it undergoes on exposure to light. The rate of

Photopic and scotopic flicker sensitivity of a rod monochromat.
The sensitivity to sine-wave flicker of a rod monochromat was compared with that of a normal subject at photopic and scotopic levels of luminance. The sensitivity of the rod monochromat in the low-frequency region (below 3 Hz at scotopic levels and below 12 to 14 Hz at photopic levels) was found to be superior to that of the control. This superiority was most pronounced at photopic levels, wher...
متن کاملBrightness description using different metrics
In 1924 CIE defined the V(λ) function to describe the “relative visibility”. It was soon realised that this was not a right description for brightness. During the seven decades that passed by, several attempts were made to describe brightness for monochromatic, less saturated and near white lights. Among the near-white light descriptions the approach by Haubner [1] is the best-known. For monoch...
متن کاملImpaired mesopic visual acuity in eyes with early age-related macular degeneration.
PURPOSE To determine photopic and mesopic distance high-contrast visual acuity (HC-VA) and low-contrast visual acuity (LC-VA) in eyes with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS Measurements were made in 22 subjects with early AMD and 28 healthy control subjects. Inclusion criteria included a photopic HC-VA of 20/25 or better. Distance VA was measured using HC (96%) and LC (10%...
متن کاملThe spectral sensitivity of the goldfish and the clawed toad tadpole under photopic conditions.
The visual pigments of the vertebrate retina fall into two major classes, depending on whether they are based on vitamin Ax or vitamin Aj. The rod pigment in the former case is rhodopsin, and in the latter case porphyropsin, and the scotopic sensitivities of the animals agree well with the absorption spectra of the relevant pigment. Later work led to the view that the photopic sensitivities of ...
متن کاملThe Absorption Spectrum of Visual Purple by Aurin M. Chase and Charles Haig
The classical absorption spectrum of visual purple (KSttgen and Abelsdorff, 1896) is the difference in photometric density (log Io/I) at different wave-lengths between a solution in its unbleached and its bleached condition. The reason for this procedure is that extracts of visual purple are not pure but contain other substances which may be colored. The resulting classical subtraction curve is...
